Google+ adds much larger cover photos

Google+ has just rolled out a new feature that allows for much larger cover images — up to 2120 x 1192!

They’ve also streamlined the editing process and added a new “local reviews” tab to business pages.

Details can be found on the GreenMellen blog.

Google+ for Android gets new post abilities, moderation and more

android-13013A new update for the Google+ Android app has just rolled out, bringing with it a few nice new features:

  • Support for adding a link when creating a post
  • New notifications tray (now slides in from the right)
  • Additional Community moderation features (remove spam posts from the app)

In addition, the folks at GooglePlusDaily have found a few more updates including a search button in the navigation ribbon and seemingly some nice performance tweaks to help things run more smoothly.

You can grab the latest version of the app from Google Play here.

Finally! Full-screen Hangouts On Air.

The “Hangout” feature on Google+ has been amazing since day one, and it’s a big reason that many people sign up for the service.  When Google released the “Hangouts on Air” feature, which allowed you to easily live stream your Hangout, it made things even better.

The one drawback was that the video still looked like a normal Hangout, complete with the thumbnail videos at the bottom of the screen.  You can now use the Cameraman app in hangouts to make it full-screen!

This certainly isn’t a killer feature in and of itself, but it’s the steady stream of small changes that is making Google+ great. As TechCrunch said about this feature: Incremental changes, small tweaks, and improvements: This is the Google way.

New Pan and Zoom feature for high-res photos

Google+ has long had an awesome photo feature, and it just got a bit better.  You can now pan and zoom small areas of high resolution photos on the desktop version of Google+. According to Google’s Dave Cohen:

Google+ is full of amazing photos, and today we’re introducing the ability to pan and zoom when viewing photos from your desktop. To give these features a try, simply open a large photo in the lightbox, then:

– use your mouse wheel to zoom in or out
– click and drag to pan right, left, up or down

Higher resolution photos will offer more to explore, so we’re excited to launch pan and zoom just weeks after launching full-size backups of your Android photos (

Photos are certainly a very important aspect of social media, and this is a great new feature from Google!

All about the new “communities” feature

Google+ recently launched their new Communities feature, and it’s gone over quite well.  Here’s a bit about how it works:

Google+ getting a major visual overhaul

Google is in the process of rolling out a major update to Google+ and it looks amazing!  Here’s a video to show you what they’re doing:

In particular, they’ll be showing photos and videos in a larger format, adding a “ribbon” down the sidebar and making major changes to the profile pages.  It looks pretty awesome.

What do you think of the new look?

Big update to the Google+ iOS app

Hot on the heels of the Google+ Android app update last week, Google has pushed out an update to the iOS version as well.  New features include:

  • Instant Upload!  This has been one of my favorite features in the Android app, and it’s finally on iOS.
  • The What’s Hot stream.
  • Shake your phone to send feedback.
  • Various bug fixes and performance improvements.

You can get it in the iTunes app store here.

The video below is a reminder of why Instant Upload is so awesome.

Circle management tool improves

Google is rolling out some very nice (and long overdue) changes to your “Circles” page.  In particular, four things are new:

  • A new left-hand navigation system
  • Quick access to your email address book(s)
  • Circles that shrink in size on smaller screens
  • Lots of improvements to the “find people” tool

It looks to be a nice little update.  Many users (including myself) don’t have it yet, but it’s rolling out slowly.  Here are a few screenshots if you don’t have it yet:

Google+ Android app gets some nice updates

Still no tablet version (why?!?), but Google released a new version of the Google+ app for Android and it has some nice fixes.

  • Massive performance improvements across the app
  • What’s Hot!
  • View who +1’d a post or comment
  • Stream posts shortened to fit more per scroll
  • Infinite photos feed in ‘From your circles’
  • Stream no longer jumps to the top for an automatic refresh (yay!)

Solid improvements for sure.  You can get it in the Android Market here.

Shared posts now link back to the originals

This is a minor update, but it’s one that solves frustration for many users.  When you see a post that has been shared, the text now includes a link back to the original post, as seen here:

For those times when you stumble upon an old share, or even a recent share from a heavy poster, it’s now much easier to find your way back to the original.
